General Building Trades
Residential and commercial carpentry covers basic skills in wood, metal and concrete building materials, hand and power tools, fabrication based on construction plans, and framing of platform and post-and-beamstructures. This program is an introduction to the skill and knowledge base typically required for apprentice carpenters. Professional development and team building activities are enhanced throuh participation in Skills USA.
Carpentry I: Designed to introduce students to the basic phases of carpentry, this course includes both theory and shop/lab experiences. Students apply principles and ideas learned in the classroom to construct items in the school school shop or on school-organized projects. Students learn to read sketches, plans, and blueprints; apply trade mathematics; and work successfully in cooperative groups or teams.
Carpentry II: This course, which also introduces students to the basic phases of carpentry, includes both theory and shop/lab experiences. Students who completed the introductory course will be involved in a deeper application of the principles and ideas introduced earlier.
General Building Trades is available to juniors or seniors at Halls High School and Ripley High School
