Business Systems Technology

 

The Business Systems Technology (BST) program provides training designed to qualify graduates for entry level positions in a variety of clerical positions.    The material presented in this program is intended for the development of usable skills and technical knowledge in the field of office work.

The mission of BST reflects the institutional mission to enhance area workforce development.  The primary mission of the program is to provide training necessary to meet the occupational needs in the business technology fields within the local service delivery area.

The curriculum emphasizes performance-based competencies and integrates interpersonal, technological, and traditional office skills.  Students may engage in courses of study that will prepare them for varying career opportunities.  Multiple exit points exist at regular intervals at which time students may receive a certificate the desired level of training.

Minimum requirements for completion of work are established in each competency.  Students often exceed the minimum requirements allowing completion within the time frame established for each certificate or diploma level.  All certificate seeking students are required to complete each subject area with an overall average of “C” or above.  The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams for Word and Excel are highly encouraged by the second certificate level.  Other MOS exams are available at the student’s request.

Diploma students are also highly encouraged to take and pass the Office Proficiency Assessment Certificate (OPAC). This exam that will ensure that the various required competencies have been mastered during training.

Upon successful completion of the first two certificates, a student may make a decision as to the diploma level of choice.
